FAQs About Newborn Care

Caring for a newborn can be difficult, especially if it is your first. Having a pediatrician that you know you can count on for answers to your questions and support when required is essential. At Caring Hands Children's Clinic in Meadville and Monticello, MS, our doctors provide the answers about newborn care that you need to feel confident that your baby is getting everything they need to thrive.

Why Is My Baby Crying?

Babies only have one way to communicate, which is by crying. That is how they tell you that they have a need. On average, a baby will cry or fuss for between one and three hours a day. They cry when they are hungry, need a diaper change, need to be burped, are bored, lonely, or in pain. It is perfectly normal for them to cry. If crying seems excessive or the baby can't be comforted, take their temperature and if it is up, then you can call your pediatrician.

Why Is My Newborn’s Poop Black?

You will see all types and colors of baby poop with newborn care in Meadville and Monticello, MS. Black sticky poop is called meconium, and it is normal in the first week of your baby's life.

How Do I Care for the Umbilical Cord Stump?

The stump will fall off at some time between the 5th and 15th day after birth. In the meantime, keep it dry and clean, but don't submerge the baby in water until it has fallen off. Sponge baths only.

Are the Soft Spots on My Baby’s Head Dangerous?

They are called fontanels and will grow together over time, but in the meantime, they are not dangerous. You need to treat all of your baby's head gently. Keep an eye on the soft spots and if you notice swelling or bruising, you can talk to your pediatrician. You can safely wash your baby's hair and head.

How Do I Know If My Baby Is Eating Enough?

This is a universal worry of mothers, especially when breastfeeding. You don't really have a way to see how much they are getting, so you need to go by how they are acting. Are they contented, do they have plenty of wet and dirty diapers?  Check to make sure your baby is swallowing during breastfeeding. The best way to know if your baby is eating enough is at their visit to the pediatrician. Did they gain weight?
